They are also by far the most racist...but that is neither here nor there. Korean people do everything better than all other nations. They are smarter and faster and the build things better. They hate the Japanese, Chinese, Americans, North Koreans and really any country that they might be compared to or have to compete with. The Argentinians are greasy, Japanese are stupid, Americans slow, Nigerians have dirty skin, and the Greeks...I don't think they knew that Greece existed until they were bracketed with them for the World Cup 2010. Once the Greeks were acknowledged as a nation, they too of course were deemed an inferior race when compared to the mighty Koreans.

Still, the amount of pride of these people have is breathtaking! Everyone just had to cheer on the mighty Red Devils soccer team (who wore blue for most matches and had a tiger on their jersey...don't know where the devil thing came from). Koreans gathered from near and far to watch their team work towards the ultimate soccer glory, the World Cup trophy.

Now, as an American I do take some amount of pride in my country. I think they did an outstanding job during the qualifying matches. I also know that in the world of men's soccer, they BLOW. I have some sense of reality when it comes to these things. Doesn't mean I wouldn't be stoked if they went all the way, but I'm not gonna put my money on them! Not these Koreans. The Red Devils will conquer any team that comes in their path because they are Korean, the superior race. Not even the likes of smelly Argentina could stop them (final score, 4-1 Argentina).

For every game, whether it was 8:30pm, 11pm or 3:30am Korean time, there was a massive mob of Koreans flooding the streets, beaches, bars, restaurants...you name it. If there was a game and a TV they were there to cheer on the Devils. Red clothes were absolutely necessary...preferably saying something that had to do with Korea, Corea, or fighting.

The Friday before their first World Cup game, I came to school unprepared. I was immediately dressed in a red Korean soccer shirt and handed face paint to paint all of the children in appropriate soccer crazy garb before they began their day of making noise makers and beating drums...no one told me this would take place...I actually had a lesson plan.

The first game was incredible and nothing that I could ever have expected. Thousands of Koreans and foreigners gathered in front of a giant screen on the beach...in the middle of a lightning storm, drunk on beer and soju.

There are so many ways to categorize the fans in that crowd...
1. The drunk business man:
This particular specimen will be wearing his shiniest business suit, and usually have a brief case (even though it is Saturday). He will be watching the game from his cell phone, even though he has made sure to take up as much room in front of you so that no one is able to view the giant screen but him. He reeks of soju, beer, and kimchi and usually comes alone, sneaking in by himself and planting is fat ass in front of you like the small plot of sand had his name on it the entire time.

2. The exhausted children:
"Who cares if it's 3am...this is your team! This is your country! You're 7 years old (Korean age...AKA 5), and you should have enough pride to stay up into the wee hours of the night to watch this game!"

3. The crying women:
If you have a vagina you have ABSOLUTELY NO FUCKING CLUE about soccer. You cry at a yellow card. You scream for corner kicks. You are a basket case of emotions...and for no reason at all. You are sporting your red devil horns and have made the Korean flag look slutty. You also are wearing 4 inch heals...in the sand. The man that forced you to come on a date to watch the game you must feign interest in hasn't acknowledged your presence since he threw down the cardboard box for you to sit on and gave you the bag of dried squid. Life is good.

4. The premature celebrator:
I am convinced that this person is the reason that Korea did poorly...they celebrate far too soon and over absolutely nothing. A GOAL KICK! LET'S JUMP UP AND DOWN AND OBSTRUCT EVERYONE'S VIEW BECAUSE WE HAVE NO CLUE WHAT IS GOING ON ANYWAYS!

5. The foreigner:
Your team isn't playing tonight and there is a Korea game on. Let's wear red and get wasted for the hell of it...you're only in Korea for the World Cup once. We can often times spot these supporters completely decked in the Korean gear, sporting wigs, drums, glow sticks, noise makers...you name it, these fans are no joke...because the game itself is a joke to them.

The second game was at 8pm against Argentina. I was sure to show up in my new "Super Korea" shirt to watch them get stomped by Argentina in front of a full, Olympic sized stadium of fans. Each goal made the Koreans more and more sad, angry, jealous, embarrassed...the list went on and on. Every single Korean I know put money on Korea...I won about 15 bucks knowing damn well that there was no way the Devils could beat Argentina. Alas, the mighty Reds were stomped out 4-1. The next day was a somber one. No one asked if I watched the game. No one really uttered a word about soccer until the next game a week later. All of the sudden, Argentina was just so good at soccer, no one could beat them..."Argentina has many professional player. Korea have 2 players in Europe. That is all!" EXCUSES, EXCUSES, KOREA!

Onto the next game, which like a loyal fan I attended at Haeundae Beach at 3:30am. Again, thousands of people in the sand making far too much noise and drinking massive quantities. A report in the Korea Times said that condoms and liquor sales went up by 55% on match days. Considering Koreans believe that kimchi will prevent AIDS, I'm going to say the condoms were a drunken impulse buy.

The sweet 16 was a big accomplishment for the Koreans. They put up a nice fight but alas, they failed to overtake Uraguay. Excuses were made of course on the Korean's behalf...poor refereeing, unfair advantages, timing. Everyone fails to mention the own goal that wasn't counted when the Korean keeper caught an easy shot INSIDE THE GOAL and then stepped out.

But, all in all it was amazing to have a World Cup experience outside of the States, where the beautiful game of soccer is actually appreciated. Red Devils for life! 대한민국!!!<embed src="http://www.youtube.com/get_player" type="application/x-shockwave-flash"width="320" height="266" bgcolor="#FFFFFF"flashvars="flvurl=http://v6.nonxt8.googlevideo.com/videoplayback?id%3D9f1310f874f0f5a2%26itag%3D5%26app%3Dblogger%26ip%3D0.0.0.0%26ipbits%3D0%26expire%3D1331062886%26sparams%3Did,itag,ip,ipbits,expire%26signature%3D37B7DFAC633DCDA2ABE685B071F8201A9EE47C39.42A79EC0BFC8F4EFEDD710C55F35295A722B2A11%26key%3Dck1&iurl=http://video.google.com/ThumbnailServer2?app%3Dblogger%26contentid%3D9f1310f874f0f5a2%26offsetms%3D5000%26itag%3Dw160%26sigh%3DLD7oioU1h1TECzQbojBat81Tbuo&autoplay=0&ps=blogger"allowFullScreen="true" />

A Series of Amazing Events

I last left you with my amazing trip to Suwon and a rant about my Korean co-workers and poor little Nick. My friend Linda and I have been training for ultimate goal of running the Gwangali Half Marathon in October.
This past 10 days we have been doing the Master Cleanse Diet which totally BLOWS. It's 10 days of nothing but lemon juice, maple syrup, water, and cayenne pepper. Today is the last day and I am so beat, but 12 pounds lighter.
Last weekend we went rafting up in Inje (cross it off the list) and bungee jumping. Rafting is such a joke in Korea...so silly. Of course life jackets and helmets are required when slowly and carefully drifting down the peaceful shit smelling river at a glacial pace, hitting only a pebble or two along the way. White water rafting, Korean style! Pictures to come! We then got to bungee jump off a 52m tall bridge for a mere 35,000 won (30 dollars). The feeling was amazing! I recommend it to anyone and EVERYONE.

Will update with pictures soon!
Love yas
e

Maybe I am insensitive but...

Yesterday, little Nick, one of my 5 year old students fell while playing on our play ground equipment in the "gym room". He ended up landing head first on the edge of a ramp and splitting open his forehead.
This was just as I was walking into work. I was greeted by the hysterical cries of my co-teacher, Jimmy, screaming at me in Konglish to find a towel and that she needed help. Nick was not crying at all and being that I have seen a good deal of head injuries, didn't seem to be bleeding a whole lot either.

I ran and got a towel, while the rest of the Korean staff backed away in horror as if they have never seen blood before, gasping for breath and really just getting in the way rather than helping the situation. Nick was put into the school van with Jimmy and rushed to the hospital down the street while the other teachers called him mom and in hushed tones whispered about how horrible the situation was.

When Jimmy returned to school she was so distraught. She said she felt horrible and that his mother would be so angry and went on and on about how bad she felt.

Now, in Jimmy's defense, Nick was not supposed to be in the gym by himself. His clumsy ass fell down all on his own...so why was she feeling so bad? If she was in the room, what could this 5 feet tall, 110 lb woman have done to prevent the situation?

Everyone was just so upset that we canceled all lesson plans for the 5 year old class and made "Get Well Soon" cards in every possible language imaginable. Then, as a school, every teacher walked 2 miles to his house to apologize profusely to his mother.

As nice that this is that they were so concerned and all, is this really necessary? I mean kids fall down...they break bones and crack themselves open. It is what they do, especially little boys! Well, not in Korea. This is a catastrophe! How dare we not watch this disobedient child every second that he is in our care. How could we betray this mother's trust and not dive across the hard wood floor to cushion his fall? GIVE ME A BREAK!

Best part...Jimmy tells me, "Erika, you could see the bone!"

"Uhhh, ya Jimmy, feel your forehead. Is there a lot of muscle there? Is there a lot of skin? It's not like he sliced 4 inches deep and was impaled by the corner. Facial tissue breaks open easily. It also heals quickly."

That was comforting enough for her...until the doctor told his mother that the nerves might have been damaged and that he may never open his eye again...

TALK ABOUT MALPRACTICE INSURANCE...let's tell them the worst possible scenario that will absolutely never happen, so when it turns out to be just a simple scar, everyone praises me and says what an amazing doctor I am!

So, that is my rant for the day. I wasn't even going to write about it until another Korean teacher, Lucy came up to me just now to say, "Wow, Nick's mother is very generous." Mind you, Lucy's English is...I don't want to say not good since she is going to classes 5 days a week...but, not where it should be as an "English teacher". So, I say, "Really? Why? What did she bring us?" thinking that she saw our unnecessary gesture of showing up to her house unannounced was cute and wanted to thank us.

"Because she forgive us."

I don't feel as though forgiveness is needed or warranted. The kid not listening or following the rules fell down, as kids do and happened to end up with a couple of stitches.

Well, little Nick, enjoy getting your ass kissed for the rest of the year. Just don't knock your block head on anything else!

A little late but worth the wait!

Sara and I finally ventured outside of our dynamic city of Busan and into the wondrous world of the Seoul Metropolitan area. We ventured north on Parent's Day weekend up to Suwon and Osan, home of an amazing fortress, the US Air Force base in Songtan, and the biggest market in Korea, Osan Market (home to many battles in the Korean War).

We began our journey bright and early, on the KTX train headed for Cheonan Asan. Since it was a holiday, all of the reserved seats were sold out for hours. We were forced to stow away, finding a stop of ground to sit on wherever we could. We ended up finding a perch in between cars 9 and 10. We ran into Ronald Weasley and Harry Potter there as well...(get it, 9 and three quarters?)

We made it out to the fortress in Suwon, not really knowing what to expect. We took a KTX train, the Seoul subway, and a bus to get there. Upon first seeing it, we thought we had traveled so far for nothing, being that where we were dropped off there was only an old wooden building that could not be entered, circled by a high traffic round about. We ventured further into the market area, to find that the fortress didn't just encompass that small area, but almost the entire city of Suwon. We grabbed a map and followed the walls around. It was a beautiful, clear day! It took us about 2 hours to walk the entire thing. Nice little cultural outing for the two of us!

The rest of the weekend we spent next to the Air Force base in Songtan. We ate the most amazing western food, drank way too many free drinks, danced our socks off, and bought things that were totally unnecessary. All in all it was a good weekend while an incredible drunk ride home.

The next week of work was capped by "Funny Zoo Teacher" on Thursday, bringing the cutest mini pig ever! Learned lots about the pig family and how every breed is different...did you know that pigs for bacon have curly tails while the other ones don't? And, there is such a thing as a sheep pig. It has a sheep body with a pig face, which doesn't sound so impressive, but was still odd to see. Here's my new little buddy...
And then came Teacher's Day, my favorite day of the year. I was showered with gifts and goodies and all of the kids were forced to tell me how much they loved me! I totally scored this year, being the only foreign teacher...we're talking GNC, Kiel's, Body Shop...oodles of goodies! Love my kids, love Korea, lovin life!

So that's two more things off of the list! But I have definitely added more...
Here's a revised version...
Hike some mountains (so far we have hiked from Changwon to Jinhae and Jangsan Mountain)
Camp on Geoje Island (고제도)
Mudfest (Boreyeon...July 17th 2010)
Lantern Festival (Jin Ju, October)
Snowboard on Mt Muju
Green Tea Fields (Boseong)
Beomosa Temple (Busan)
Temple Stay
Paragliding
Ziplining (May 23, 2010)
Runs (so far we have run the Breast Cancer 10k in Haeundae and the Daedapo 10k)
Ocheonjang Spa (check)
Spa Land (check)

Rafting

Go to Daegu and actually see the sights...not just the food and boys (this weekend)

explore Changwan

Turtle Ship (Jinhae)

Jagalchi fish market at 5am (Jagalchi, Busan)

Everland themepark (Seoul)

Go to a water park

Firework Festival (Gwangali, Busan, October 2010)

See the sites of Seoul

sit in the "Exciting Zone" at a Lotte Giants baseball game (Sadgik, Busan)

See a Busan Mighty Wings basketball game (Sadgik, Busan)

See a Busan soccer game (Sadgik, Busan)

Stripper Norebong (check)

Screen golf

Suwon Fortress (check)

Jeju Island

Kunsan

Ice fishing Mountain

소락샨 National Park

take silly Korean photos

Drink in a bag...as much as humanly possible

Songjeon Beach

Ulsan

Wine train

Osan (check)

Gwangan Bridge Walk

Ulleong-Do

Dinosaur Museum

Gyeongju

Half Marathon

Make Kimchi

Sokcho

We just keep checking off more and more!

xoxo

Checking Things Off

3 weeks strong on the blog...woooo me!
I have been actively working on my list, making changes, adding, crossing off...making sure I can absorb all that Korea has to offer this time around.

School this week was extremely short due to Children's Day, which was Wednesday, May 5th (also Cinco de Mayo and an excuse to drink excessively). Our original plans for our day off consisted of a 4 hour bus ride to the Boseong tea fields for lunch, a picturesque view and a little fresh air. Unfortunately, or alcohol induced brains led us to change our plans for a day full of adventure and beauty to a leisurely visit to the Orcheongjang hot springs and sauna (also on the list, so not a waste of time!).

This spa is said to be the biggest in all of Asia, complete with waterfalls, pools of water varying in temperature and mineral content, saunas, steam rooms, and mass amounts of naked Koreans oogling our rotund western bodies.

The spa experience is nothing new to me...I am quite used to being accosted by older women sitting next to me in the buff. Being followed around by a group of naked Korean 6 year olds does not phase me anymore. But this particular day, being Children's Day, there was an unusual amount of stalkage and we three lone Wae-gooks (foreigners) were pinned into a corner, drilled with short and simple questions and answers..."I am happy. How are you?", "How old are you?", "Do you have baby?", and so on.

After pruning up for a couple of hours in the baths, we decided to splurge and get the full Korean spa experience, complete with an exfoliating scrub and cucumber mask. I officially am ready for summer, as all of my tan lines and I believe some of my tattoos have been scraped from my body by an older half naked woman with a hand sock that felt like a Brillo pad.

After our relaxing visit and an hour of skin scrapage, we retired to a friends apartment where the 3 of us prepared a Cinco de Mayo feast for 20...frijoles, enchiladas, quesadillas, pico de gallo, burritos, fajitas, albondigas, mexican rice, rice pudding, guacamole, sangria, margaritas...you name it, we foreigners were there to devour it. Needless to say, work was slow today, being that I didn't sleep until 2, and woke up with Jose Cuervo laughing in my face as his evil hang over melted my brain.

Lots planned for the weekend...there are more things to check off of the list!

(We did check off a few more...
Stripper Norebong CHECK
Hiking Jangsan Mountain CHECK

more to come next week!)

Until next time! <3

Ginhae Cherry Blossom Festival

Last year, this festival in Ginhae, South Korea was literally my second time out of Busan. We got up incredibly early, went to the wrong bus terminal, and made it out to the crowded streets of Ginhae to see the wonders of the season.
This year was quite different. Different people, different route, different mentality. But, all in all the same amount of beautiful!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_XF6OnvOq9mo/S9aFs0s4uqI/AAAAAAAAADw/-MnZzAYuo7s/s320/IMG_0451.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5464702202968324770" />

We started our long, long journey at the Sasang bus station in Busan. A group of us met up to do the unthinkable...climb a mountain from one city to the next. The bus dropped us off at the Changwon bus station, only 45 minutes away. We started at the bottom of the mountain and trekked our way all the way to the top. Traversing the treacherous ridge and then repelling our way down the rocky, steep mountain and into the city of Ginhae. Ok, yes this is a dramatic retelling...but, we did eat shit a couple of times on the way down. The hike took us about 2 hours to get up, 1 to get down and then another hour to get into the city. Our thighs were burning and we were drenched in sweat, but the effort all paid off in the end!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_XF6OnvOq9mo/S9aHUZS09MI/AAAAAAAAAD4/TqUOfZ8n3g8/s320/IMG_0490.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5464703982317663426" />
Sara and I at the top!

Once at the bottom, we meandered into the city, stopping to eat in a tent and rehydrate on beer and makoli and refuel on pajang (Korean pancakes) and a meat plate of epic proportions.
After filling our bellies and giving our livers a little kick, we ventured further, seeing the sights. We made it to the famous love stream. It's a small creek, lined by cherry blossom trees and small bridges to cross over. It was very romantic for all of the single waegoks (foreigners) involved.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_XF6OnvOq9mo/S9aK8FSlujI/AAAAAAAAAEA/X5VM9By3YoE/s320/IMG_0428.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5464707962677606962" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_XF6OnvOq9mo/S9aLUzq1EbI/AAAAAAAAAEI/ILpKehq2VhU/s320/IMG_0431.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5464708387444167090" />
After over indulging in the sappy sights and taking one too many pictures, we headed to the train station to see if we could avoid the Sunday commute's traffic back to Busan. We made it to the train station just in time to catch the last train out of GInhae. Since we got our tickets so late, we all had to sit in different cars, most of us ended up falling asleep. At our connecting station in Changwon, I was politely awoken by a Korean woman, since I was now sitting in her seat and it was time for me to get off of the train. One of our friends wasn't so lucky, waking up in Daegu (about another hour away) with no cell phone or money.

All in all it was a lovely day, amazing adventure, and a major kick in the butt. Love cherry blossoms....love Ginhae...love Korea!

Korea...Round 2

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_XF6OnvOq9mo/S9Alwj8atjI/AAAAAAAAADI/ow1yI4qtNj0/s320/IMG_0241.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5462907864213009970" />
I shamefully admit to being incredibly neglectful of my blog last year. Things in Korea became mundane and nothing really surprised me anymore. Exiting the bars as the sun was rising was a common occurrence. Soju and beer in a cab was a norm. I was not even phased by the belligerent business man meandering the beach at 11am in his suit from last night, but no shoes. The culture shock wore off and everything started to be just normal incidents in my everyday, Korean life.
Before leaving in September of 2009, I was fortunate enough to experience Korean white water rafting (sitting in a calm river on a tube and trying not to hit your oar on the rocks 2 feet below you), temples, festivals, beaches, restaurants and bars galore, amongst other splendid Korean forms of entertainment. I drowned myself in alcohol and stuffed my face with cheese that costs triple the price as it would in the states. I woke up at 5pm every Saturday to find texts messages I don't remember sending, to people I swore I wouldn't speak to again. The hang overs were killer. The dinners after were filling. The nights enjoyed were plentiful. But, this time around, something has to give.

I have sworn to myself that not only will I not misplace my precious weekends at the bottom of a bottle, but also to explore, travel and experience this fine country.

So far, I have been able to savor many experiences in the 8 short weeks since my return. I have celebrated with feast and friends, games and wine...all the comforts of home with far more life and personality. I have hiked mountains, gone to shows, ran, enjoyed festivals and still been able to enjoy a cocktail, without braking the bank of my liver. The adventure continues. I have put together a list of things that I must do or see in Korea this time around. Thus far, my progress is great.

I vow to document these events this time around. If not to feel a little accomplished, at least to give me something to do besides my Master's homework...procrastination is my speciality.

So, here is the list thus far. No particular order or method to the madness...just things that must be done and places that must be seen. Keep you posted!

Hike some mountains (vague....yes)

<span class="Apple-style-span" I will put on my finest and most comfortable soccer clothes and be ONLY female soccer player in all of South Korea. It will be quite a scene for my little ones.
Sara and I will be hosting our Halloween gathering in our empty apartment so our after school costumes have to be superb...we are working on the details as we speak.

Last weekend was one for the record books. I don't think I have ever been so hung over for such a long, consecutive period of time. Here, in Korea, it is just one event after the other. Starting out your weekend of debauchery on a Thursday at Open Mic night doesn't help the cause...but when followed by a manditory school branch dinner/bar night, you weekend is basically thrashed from the get go. After laying around attempting to recover ALL Saturday, we headed to the local watering hole, Guri Bar for a birthday party which was only the climax of our weekend, ending in bumpy, Sunday family dinner, consisting of excellent vegan dishes and lots and lots of red wine.

We hope to make this week a little more productive than the weekend. We have been planning to take a hike all this week, we will see if it actually happens. We have acquired more furniture from a friend that is leaving the country on Saturday. We will be moving in into our place tomorrow morning before work. Then, we have the task of rearranging our apartment perfectly for our get together and coming up with the best costumes ever...any ideas?

Other than that, teaching is getting a lot easier. I have control over my classes, as the end of the session approaches. I now know what I have to do from the get go to get those little helions to behave. From what I have been told, our 1st week of vacation is coming up at the end of January...so any one is welcome to come. We are thinking about going to Thailand. We found a really cheap travel site where it will cost us about as much as it would to fly from LA to Denver. Amazing.

It is finally starting to get cold here which I welcome with open arms. A year in the OC with all the sun and heat has made me really welcome the seasons. From what I have been told, it doesn't snow here. We have winter weather about as cold as Monterey, just not as foggy. I can't wait to go snowboarding in other parts of the county. Korea is so small that it would seriously only take a 6 hour car ride to drive from tip to tip...and its only that long because its very mountainous.

That's all for now!
see ya next week

love love love
erika :)

Free beer and food at company functions = good times

Well, we have just ended week 5 of our Korean journey! The week was uneventful for me. Got a nice little day flu thingy on Friday so I layed around all weekend with a box of Kleenex and some Tylenol (thank you Bob and Hillary!).
Fortunately, I recovered quickly from my brush with death (my cold) and was able to attend our company picnic/sports day. Sara and I dressed in our finest...soccer shorts rolled as high as they would go, sweatshirts, soccer socks and some glare...we wanted them to know we meant business! We partook in the most intense and competitive game of dodge ball that I have ever encountered, tug-of-war (my team had all the fat kids, myself included), Korean see-saw (taking the smallest Korean woman on your team and flinging her down a line of 30 people, 4 feet off the ground on a thin piece of fabric), balloon blowing up contest, and giant ball bouncing contest. We also indulged in a battle of the branches karaoke competition where Sara and I manhandled the challengers while accompanied by the vocal stylings of the Backstreet Boys.

Along with plenty of athletically testing and strength challenging games, we were provided 2 whole pigs, a fried food box, all the beer we could drink and a stage, complete with a bubble blower, flame thrower and foam shooter. These Koreans don't fuck around.

I also took part in a little bit of soccer with some of the Korean kids and one of my co-workers. It made me miss soccer so bad, until of course the universal machismo kicked in when the Korean men joined the game and not only refused to pass me the ball, but acknowledge that I was anywhere near the field. Took me back to my Monterey Bay indoor games, fighting with the Mexican dudes that would come crash our games.

Monday was Canadian Thanksgiving. Some of our fellow coworkers that we hadn't met until the picnic happen to live in our building and were hosting a nice like pot-luck and were nice enough to invite the new kids. I brought some wasabi mashed potatoes (courtesy of Dad's amazing recipe). It was a nice little gathering with our friendly neighbors from the north eh...even though most of them don't know what their celebration is aboot. Happy Thanksgiving Canada!

So before I part, I have compiled my list of the top 10 things I have learned so far in Korea...

10. Lines are not a suggestion...

These people are nuts when it comes to getting in lines. Whether it be for the bus, the subway, the elevator, waiting in line for a cheeseburger, if you are not breathing down the person's neck in front of you, you are not in line. I have been cut by many an old lady for not being properly placed in these so called lines.

9. If there is an open door you must run through it, no matter who you trample on your way in...

So, say you get into one of these mandatory lines that I previously mentioned...once in said line, you are obligated to stampede into whatever the desired destination of the line may be. You are not allowed to kindly let the person in the subway car or the elevator exit before making you grand and much anticipated entrance. You MUST, without haste, enter, taking down the elderly, pregnant and handicapped upon access.

8. No talking on public transportation...

It is an absolutely heinous notion to think that making idle chit chat while riding on any form of public transportation is acceptable...and the Koreans will let you know that...in their loudest and most offending voice. Nevermind a subtle whisper, a light chuckle or giggle. These forms of sound are prohibited, along with coughing too loudly or talking on a cellular device. And, not only will they scream at you to stop, they will then proceed to talk to other Korean people about how rude you were for talking, in a voice louder that the original sound that was made.

7. SQUAT, SQUAT, SQUAT

Squatting is the position of choice for most Koreans, from what I have gathered. Instead of real sit down toilets in public restrooms there are holes in the ground which you...you guessed it, squat over. Men and women can frequently be found resting their legs on a long day by squatting...ANYWHERE. in the subway, on the street. Chair??? What's a chair?

6. English is cool...

Even if it makes absolutely no sense. If your advertisement, song, clothing, etc. has English on it, no matter how misspelled, grammatically incorrect, or incompetently translated it is, it is cool. I saw a sweatshirt on a lady that said "Sea World. Shiny silver bacon leaves" or something to that effect...she was o, so posh!

5. BLEND IN

Rarely will you find a Korean with any colored hair besides black or brown. No highlights, no fun and funk colors, no tiny nose studs or tattoos of any sort. Blend, blend, blend...or stick out like a sore thumb and get stared at like me. Either way...your choice.

4. The bigger the better...

I have tried to find fashion trends here in Korea. There is no fall color or true staple or method to the madness of the dress code here. The only thing that really stood out is this...oversized clothing. Pre-arrival I worried that it would be quite a task to find clothing here. I was pleasantly mistaken and found that these women wear their clothes far, far larger than they rightfully should. They sport shirts to their knees and pants that are ridiculously gargantuan for their petite frames. Maybe I will do some shopping after all, and show what a size large SHOULD look like when worn correctly.

3. Touching vs TOUCHING...

In this country, personal space is a thing of fairy tales and mythical lands far, far away. You will often find, despite the rampant homophobia, men holding the hands of men and women interlocking fingers with one another as a sign of friendship. Sara and I tried it and it just wasn't our thing. Maybe the stigma of what it means in the states drove us away from the embrace, or maybe our person space bubble is far to encompassing for this country. Either way, touching in a friendly, non-sexual manner is good and encouraged. Sexual touching though...bad, bad, bad. Korean girls believe that Korean boys have koodies until they are out of high school. If you ever want to punish a Korean kid, make them partner up with a member of the opposite sex. There is no kissing, petting, talk of kissing or petting, thinking about either of the two, allowed in Korea...guess the American space bubble doesn't encompass that kind of "touching", where we seem to be pretty liberal a society.

2. Superstitions...

My favorite so far is that if you sleep with the fan/air conditioning/any kind of cooling device on, it will lower your core temperature so much that you WILL die. They hate the sun...will do anything to stay out of it. Rain will burn your skin, ergo they carry an umbrella everywhere. If you drink anything, even water while you are eating you will eat too much and get fat. Just a mindless stream of crazy do's and don't consume the daily lives of this country.

and lastly...

1. Kimchi...

It is the signature Korean dish. It is served as a side with everything. It is the equivalent to bread and butter, french fries, veggies on the side. It is the one thing that is agreed upon to be acceptable with every meal, mixable with every animal by product, and still ok to be consumed on its own. Whether it is fresh or packaged, if there is kimchi on the table, it will be eaten.

thats all for now! come back next week!

love love love

erika :)

THE PUSAN INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL IS HERE!!!

Monday, we planned to go see the movie "Religulous" with Bill Maurer that I guess just came out in the states! Of course, due to obstacles and unforeseen distractions, we were too late and tickets ran out. :(

But...basically this film festival is the BIGGEST of its kind in all of Asia. They have turned Haeundae beach into the "festival village" and have tents and such on the sand. Sara and I missed the film festival part of the venue since it runs during the day and we are either working or sleeping, but got to witness countless numbers of people sitting on the beach, lighting off fireworks and drinking after hours. Quite a sight.

Friday (10/4) was a national holiday here in South Korea. It was independence day...that's right, the anniversary of South Korea breaking off from North Korea and becoming its own separate nation. No one worked...except for us kids at CDI of course! Only half of my students showed up to school, since all public schools were closed for the day anyways. Only the little shits that misbehave attended..just my luck!

I have these 2 kids in my last class, lowest level, Troy and Josh. These kids are twins, smart as ever, but always misbehaving and competing with one another, sometimes physically. Honestly, I don't really care what they do, because they are pretty sharp when it comes to the lessons, but they are such a distraction to my other kids...who aren't the brightest crayons in the box already. I was warned about them by my head instructor and how the staff has tried to put them in different classes or on different schedules, but their mother refuses. They have always been quite problematic. So my HI told me that I needed to make an example out of one of them...either one, whoever pissed me off more that day, and just kick them out of class. Even though I'm not very fond of belittling children in my day to day life, I just about had it on Friday...so i picked Troy and kicked him out. To my absolute disappointment, none of the Korean teachers would come to my aid and the branch manager took him out of class for 5 minutes and brought him back, candy in hand!

Since then, I have tried using other tactics to make them behave. Monday was amazing! They sat the whole time in class and participated and only disrupted anyone once! Yay for the evil genius that can manipulate young Korean children's minds!

Other than the film festival (or being the vicinity of the film festival while not actually viewing movies) it hasn't been very eventful here. We have discovered a couple of really cool foreigner bars.

Which reminds me...Sara and I requested songs at a bar called Thursday Party and were dancing around to them like cool kids...and the people that had been here for 8 months had never heard them before! Super overplayed songs like "Go Girl" and "When I Grow Up" and my FAVORITE, "Swing"! Please friends...do not let me be that person that is so musically out of the loop! Let me know what's in! Save me from Korean musical damnation!

Ok, sorry for the side note...

But ya, foreigner bars! Its nice to hear English being spoken fluently! What else have we done? O, ya...lots of casino-ing...to my wallets dismay. I don't lose too much, but I really hate gambling so it upsets me.

Sara ate chicken ass hole...and surprise, surprise, it tasted like shit!

OOOOO I acquired a couch for our humble abode! FRIGGIN FINALLY there is something in our living room. We are getting a TV from a friend this week and hopefully (fingers crossed) will have a beer pong table set up within the month!

and...drum roll please....the long awaited premier of our apartment video!

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=YfA-DeoUgF0

I'm going to keep putting pics up on facebook so check them out!

love you all

keep sending the emails! i thoroughly enjoy them!

love love love

erika :)

Well, we have conquered week 3 of our Korean journey. We are finally out of the Coatel Hotel in Seoul (thank god!).

Like I said in my last post, our arrival in Pusan was postponed due to Chusok which is the Korean Thanksgiving celebration. So, we got an extra 3 days in Seoul. In those days we did some karaoke (way different in Asian countries), visited the Korean War Memorial, and explored.

Now we are in our amazing new apartment in the Seomyeon district of Pusan, South Korea.
We have a great 2 bedroom apartment on the 14th floor in the middle of the city. We have a beautiful view, a big living room (with nothing in it), a bathroom with a bedet and hard wood floors. Of course, we don't have any furniture except for our beds, but we will eventually work it out.

And of course, bad luck follows me wherever I go! Here's a recap of my first meal in my apartment...

I go down to the family mart store (its like a 7-11) which is conveniently located on the 1st floor of our building. I purchase a pack of 4 slices of bread, a thing of ramen, a pack of american cheese, a box of butter, a bottle of water and some cheetos.

I get upstairs to make myself an amazing grilled cheese sandwich and some soup...so excited. All I have wanted to do for the last week and a half was eat this and be able to make it on my own...

So I break into my supplies...

the bread is not a loaf of bread at all. It's a chocolate sandwich (white bread with some chocolate frosting crap in the middle)

my butter is not in a cube...its a box of tiny butter packets that you would find at a restaurant

So after finding this out and making due with what I have, I come to find that we don't have gas or hot water...meaning no soup or grilled cheese or a hot shower that I was looking forward to.

Then I start to thank god that I bought that extra bag of cheetos. I open them...THERE IS NO CHEESE ON MY CHEETOS! They're like ranch flavor or something horribly unappetizing! Needless to say I was a little upset!

After the grilled cheese incident, Sara and I proceeded to live without gas for the next 3 days. Thank god it was hot and humid as all hell so we didn't mind taking cold showers! We didn't have to work our first week in either, so we spent a lot of our time sleeping and exploring. We went to Haeundae beach and layed out one day. The beach is gorgeous and we were lucky to have some superb weather!

We also explored the Pusan National University district with the bars and restaurants, the night life in Seomyeon, by our apartment, saw a movie in Nampo-dong and the casino/5 star hotel/giant department store that we have a block away from us!

We actually have gotten to meet some really cool people that also work in Pusan for CDI. Funny story how we met...we were given a temporary cell phone that used to belong to another CDI employee, and one of her friends called us looking for her. We had an awkward convo and he invited us to a party by the beach...which we went to of course! We ended up getting stuck in a monsoon on the beach and staying out until 8 in the morning...indulging in free breakfast in the casino before retiring to bed.

I started work last Tuesday (09/23/08). I screwed up pretty badly my first set of classes, but i think that I have everything pretty much figured out now.

Monday: April English 240-630

Tuesday: CDI English Chip 720-1015

Wednesday: April English 240-630

Thursday: CDI English Chip 720-1015

Friday: April English 240-630

April English is the younger kids that don't know much English at all. We work a lot on phonics and basic vocabulary. These kids are freakin nuts! Actually, most of my April English kids know more English than my upper level kids in CDI do!

CDI English Chip is a higher level of English with kids that are like around 13-15 years old. I am working at the Saha branch with Sara, but she is working different classes.

Now, I'm beginning week 2 of teaching! My little ones are brats and I want to hit them every chance I get (which is totally an acceptable punishment here btw) but I just can't bring myself to do it! So I yell until I'm horse, which obviously doesn't make them stop. I will eventually figure out how to bribe them into behaving well! My older class on the other hand doesn't speak at all. I guess Sara and I are splitting this guy, Paul's schedule. He was brought in and failed training but they tried to give him a second chance by allowing him to teach while closely monitoring him. Well, he obviously didn't do too well cause Sara and I took over for him! More proof of his "job well done" is the withdrawl rate of the kids in my class...the class started with 10 kids. When I started (only 4 weeks into the session) we were down to 3. Pretty pathetic. So, these guys know nothing and probably aren't too comfortable considering I'm like the 4th teacher they have seen in the past month!

All in all, Korea is great and I love it here thus far...

O and here's all my info...

Cell: 010) 2993-9408

Address: Erika Ulfelder

<span class="Apple-tab-span" friends!

obviously you got my email and that is why you are on my blog! thanks for visiting!

as you can see, i am in korea, alive and well! there were a couple of bumps along the way...well actually i hit the bumps in the airport before we even left...but that is all done with and united will be kissing my butt soon enough!

this week sara and i are in seoul at the Coatel Hotel. We arrived on Friday night and started training on monday morning, bright and early. the room is nice...two twin beds, kitchen with a stove, sink and fridge, bathroom fully equipped with a bedet, washing machine, smoking room (no idea why), etc...

training went well. i was a little worried at first since i have absolutely no idea how to teach, but everything is very structured and planned out with little room for improvisation or creativity. Basically it is all on a computer program, we just facilitate what the program is providing. They are using us for our accents most of all.

What else is going on...hmmm...i'm the tallest person here! i catch people staring at me everywhere i go! not only am i the giant white girl, but tattoos are illegal so i dont really fit in too well. I looked around a department store and all the clothes are tiny...i barely even fit into the fitting rooms or the bathroom stalls!

Sara and I took a bus tour of the city on sunday and we saw a lot of neat things. we went in the biggest shopping mall in all of asia and a district that they proudly refer to as "the mecca of electronics"...literally 2 floors just of digital cameras. absolutely INSANE! there is also a very touristy district called Itaewon that has western food and brands and things.

Other than that we have just been doing training. a group of us that are staying in the hotel went out for my birthday to hooters. The girls made me do an embarrassing stupid dance and song...i wanted to die! sara has the video of it which i will upload soon. we got to play drinking games in there like flip cup... and we even got one of the girls to play with us! after hooters we went to a soju bar (soju is a korean rice wine that is almost the equivalent to sake). one of the girls that is in our training class has been living here since may and is actually korean so she taught us all the traditional ways to serve and drink soju...we ended up stumbling back to the hotel just like any good american girl should on her birthday!

Plans have changed as to our departure. Originally we thought we were only staying in seoul until friday and then heading down to pusan to get into our apartments but, because of a huge korean holiday this weekend we were unable to get tickets and will be staying in seoul until sunday night...then off to pusan! i'm very excited to stop living out of a suitcase and to get settled in.

i should be posting blogs once a week, so please keep checking back!

otherwise, i'm on skype and aim all the time...my screen name is ocsoccerchick

i cant wait to hear from all of you! thank you for all of the bday wishes!

love love
